In 2009, 42 year old Nigel Tillett was charged for knocking down and killing legendary Belize city figure Ray Lightburn. Lightburn was walking on the northern highway near Los Lagos n the night of October 7, 2009 when he was struck and killed by a southbound Toyota Hilux.
Today in the Supreme Court room of Justice Adolph Lucas, Tillett was acquitted of the charge of causing the death by careless conduct.
When the prosecution closed its case after calling several witnesses, Tillett's attorney Arthur Saldivar submitted that his client has no case to answer because the evidence produced by the prosecution was not enough for the jury to decide on a verdict. Saldivar said there was no evidence of the state of mind of Tillett when he was driving the vehicle.
Justice Lucas upheld the submission and directed the jury of 9 women to return a formal verdict of not guilty.
