Fast Growing Village Gets Firehouse
posted (June 9, 2011)
This year has seen one of the most acute dry seasons in decades. Scores of bush fires have placed a heavy burden on the already undermanned and under-resourced National Fire service. In the Belize River Valley area where the drought hit hardest, putting out fires has become a risky business, with fire trucks having to travel from as far away as the city and airport fire stations. But today residents of Ladyville and the surrounding areas have reason for some peace of mind, because a new Fire station was officially opened at Mile 10 this afternoon, prepared to serve this fast-growing village which has a population greater than Punta Gorda Town. Here's more:…

Hon. Michael Hutchinson
"This fire service for Ladyville and our communities in Belize Rural Central could not have come at a better time, yes we are now officially in the hurricane season. However the need for this service remains as urgent as ever. Before today we have had to depend on the good will of the airport authority fire service and the fire department in Belize City to provide the help we need in the case of fire and other emergencies. Naturally our needs were not a priority since the need of the airport and Belize City came first and so rightly. This is of course came with challenges. There were times when fires were not put out in a timely manner and properties that could have otherwise been saved were lost. Never the less I would like to take this opportunity to say how much the residents of Belize Rural Central appreciate the service rendered to us by the airport authority, the fire service and the government fire department in Belize City."

Funding for the new fire station was provided by the Ministry of Transport, Communication and National Emergency Management.
