Busses Say: “Nation In Distress”

If you commute by bus - and you got to work on time today - then you should be thankful because police were expected another mass blockade of the highways by bus lines.

Based on information that there would be some commotion on the highways, late last night into the early morning Police deployed checkpoints all across the highways in the north and west to prevent any coordinated blockage. Though we are not sure what - if anything - was planned, we'd have to say it worked because there were no disruptions on the highways. But on Saturday morning in the city - there was quite a scene as some members of the Belize bus Association staged a protest in the city.

The drivers strapped upside down Belizean flags to the front of their busses - which was meant to symbolize a nation in distress.

With their air horns snarling, the queue of busses criss crossed the city, from Memorial Park, over Belcan Bridge, through Yabra, into the downtown area, and back to the park. The noise was amorous, but only eight busses participated - which has to be considered a disappointment for organizers who had hoped for a greater show of mechanical muscle.

Their protest was against the Ministry of Transport's accommodation of Westline Bus - and the discomfiture it has caused to other bus lines in the country……
