Car Dealership Owner Loses In Land Title Fraud!
posted (July 5, 2011)
Those who have a land lease know that to some extent they go to sleep at night with the knowledge that a lease is not title, and if personal or political fortunes take a turn, well, the lease can always be cancelled.

But when you've got land title, free and clear, you can sleep safe at night because that document is what the lawyers call "indefeasible." It's sacred, permanent, and like a share certificate for a portion of the nation's patrimony. But, a new con game shows that even what you have land title, clever con men can swindle you out of it - and it happens without the titleholder even knowing about it.

That's what happened to Israel Pi Marin, the owner of Belize Diesel and Equipment Company. He and Rosella Zabaneh are the title-holders for Bikini Caye in southern Belize of Dangriga.

But in January of this year, without his or Zabaneh's knowledge some shady individuals effected a conveyance of that title. That included forging Marin's and Zabaneh's signature, getting a JP to sign the document and conveying the entire island a man named Satuaye Mejia for 20 thousand dollars. Worst part is, they did all of this at the Lands Department!

On the 10th March 2011, Mejia sold the island to Laingsburg Williams for $25 thousand dollars. And on 3rd May, 2011, Williams sold the island to Kings Company Limited, also for $25 thousand dollars.

Marin only found out later in May when he went to check on his caye, saw a fire burning and found that it had been cleared off by the new owner, who had a legitimate land title from the Lands Department.

After much back and forth with police and lawyers, Marin has now made a complaint to police. Based on the documents he dug up at the lands Department a week later, Marin found out that the island was finally sold by one Lindsborg Williams to Kings Company limited.

Police are looking for one Satuaye Mejia of Jetty pier Dangriga Town pending investigation.
