UDP Supporters Say Nationalize The Port
posted (July 5, 2011)
As we showed you on last night's news - the UDP carried supporters out to Belmopan yesterday. Indeed, with municipal elections only months away, the stakes are high politically - and the UDP brought supporters from all over to bolster their standing.

But were they just rabid supporters or were they in tune with the issues? Well, it seems re-nationalization strikes a chord that resonates deeply, because most folks we spoke to say they would like to see more of it:...

Supporter
"I believe that BTL should remain in the hand of the Government and the people of Belize."

Supporter
"The way I see it is like this. You have your house right, you have a refrigerator, you have a TV in there. Then someone comes and takes your refrigerator, take your TV, and you are left with nothing. We have already gotten back WASA, we have already gotten back electricity. We want BTL; We want Port. We want our community to be perfect. We don't want someone to come and take all the things we have in our country - come and take control of the things we have in our country."

Supporter
"We need to definitely take back these utilities, my brother, and after this, I want us to go after the Port of Belize, in Belize City, and the one in Dangriga. I am from Dangriga. We are not happy with what's happening with those Ports of Belize Limited."

Supporters
"We want everything. We want port. We are very greedy."

Supporter
"For instance, like how we took back BEL, BTL. The next best thing to do is to take back ports of entries. Any goverment in their country will not allow any private entity, person, or anybody to control any port of entry for their country."

Jules Vasquez
"So how do you feel about Mr. Ashcroft?"

Supporter
"I don't know the man and I don't want to know him. I am only feeling what he is doing to us. Because I saw the next thing where he lost money at Belize Bank, I am not happy; they are trying to trick us again. We are following the news, you know."

Jules Vasquez
"But man, let's be honest. You didn't really make this sign; somebody - they gave you these signs."

Supporter
"What do you mean? How do you mean..."

Jules Vasquez
"Who are Eamon and Godfrey?"

Supporter
"Those were the attorneys who represented the man the other day. I knew these men from way back. One of them is an ex-minister, and this next one here - the 3.34 million dollars, from his dad. We haven't collected that money as yet."

Jules Vasquez
"PUP saw this crowd; they said that this is a rent-a-crowd, that they paid you all..."

Supporters
"Never! This is not a rent-a-crowd. I got to know about this trip at about ten to seven this morning, and I am right here to support it. I don't need nor do I have any money from anyone."

Jules Vasquez
"I have to ask if you got paid to come out here."

Supporter
"No man, I am doing this from the bottom of my heart, Jules. And I want the Belizean people to know that, you understand me. You see, people speak, you know. We are not paid-people. We are out here because we love Belize."
