He was on summer vacation in Cotton Tree Village but tonight a Belize City man is dead after a fight between two families turned fatal. This afternoon Jim McFadzean spoke to the victim's traumatized cousin who witnessed the brutal killing.

Jim McFadzean
"This is exactly where the actual chopping incident took place last night sometime around 10. Dayne Acevedo accompanied by his cousin Thaddeus Castillo, the victim 21 years old sometime around 10pm last night. This is where they took refuge after they got into an altercation with the minor who is allege to have chopped Thaddeus several times. Now explain to us why was there an altercation in the first place?"

Dane Acevedo, victim
"Well before that I had just arrive from work and was cooling down - I was taking a bath and my mother told me that there had a little incident between the families. She involve herself by defending one of her cousin and then it went like that and so we didn't say anything. Now we agree that we are going to the Chinese shop to purchase some things and on the way we meet a group of 5 people out there."

Jim McFadzean
"You recognize the 5 people?"

Dane Acevedo, victim
"I recognize the 5 of them and we met them and when I got close to them I recognize who they actually were."

Jim McFadzean
"Who were these people?"

Dane Acevedo, victim
"It was the Quiroz and Lemot family."

Jim McFadzean
"This is the family that had the altercation earlier with your family."

Dane Acevedo, victim
"While passing them now one of our friends who was going down the street when he heard the commotion and he attack the elderly guy. Meanwhile we were seeking refuge in here - when we saw that he and the old man was having struggle we came to assist our friend and tell him to cool down - 'we don't have to go through this, there is a better solution to this' not knowing that a young minor was right there waiting for my cousin."

Jim McFadzean
"When you initially saw the group of 5, did you all notice that the minor had a machete?"

Dane Acevedo, victim
"We saw that they had a machete and pint bottles. That is when the minor came out and lash him 3 times and one of it caught his head and he fell to the ground then I didn't realise that he got cut, I thought that the young man just lash him on his head with the machete, I didn't know that he got chop."

"I got into a struggle with the minor and I manage to take away the machete and after I came to my cousin and I tell him 'let's go Thad, we are going home now, let's go from this place before things get worse' then that is when I notice my hands and my shirt was soak with blood - that is when I called out for help. We put him into a brown SUV and we took him to the hospital. After reaching the hospital they work on him and then they tell us that he didn't make it. I still don't believe it because it just happens too quickly for me."

Jim McFadzean
"An unfortunate tragedy between two families - once again this is only one side of the story, there is always two sides to a story but what we do know is there is a 21 year old who has died from injuries suffered last night resulting from an altercation between two families."

Police investigations have since led to the detention of 18 year old Michael Coye and a fifteen year old minor, both of Cotton Tree Village. Up to news time, no charges had been filed against them.
