MIN. OF PUBLIC SERVICE RELEASES ICT STRATEGY
posted (July 29, 2011)
Every day the world grows increasingly dependent on technology...and governments are desperate to incorporate information and communication technologies to maximize efficiency. Today, Ministry of Public Service released a national ICT strategy for both Belize's public and private sectors.

Dr. Geraldo Flowers, ICT Consultant
"We have had individual consultations with about 30 agencies from the private sector, the public sector and the international agencies. We have had up to now 3 consultations. Consultations with the government, consultations with the civil society and consultations with both public, private and international partners. Overall it had been very positive. The data collection has been challenging, but that's also one of the issues and one of the reasons why national ICT strategy is necessary for us to focus on ways on which ICT information technology can be used to improve data gathering which will lead to better decision making by both the public and the private sector."

Freya August, Director - Governance Improvement
"The use of ICT has revolutionize not only here in Belize but across the region and certainly to be on board and to be able to propel Belize - to be able to develop even more faster - the need for an ICT strategy has become more than necessary. We have been at this process for quite a while, first we work align with the commonwealth secretariat. We continue to make efforts towards making this road map be clear and so today we glad that we are now at the draft of the strategy. We have been consulting with the private sector, civil society, the education sector in order that we ensure that this be a very consultative process because we are saying this strategy is a national strategy."

The National ICT strategy will now be presented to Cabinet for approval. One key recommendation is the creation of a new department that focuses entirely on ICT, along with an advisory council.
