posted (August 12, 2011)
As everyone gets ready for school to start again - all the summer camps are winding down. As we've shown you, there are all kinds of summer camps, from sports to soldiering to video production.

But we visited one camp yesterday that had the usual football - basketball thing but it mixed it in with life skills training.

It's a joint effort of CYDP and Restore Belize where the participants learned sports, and self control. Here's more:

Supt. Edward Broaster - Restore Belize
"Restore Belize Stewardship has infused the life skills training component of this summer program in the Basketball and football competition, where the young people are held in sessions with respect to conflict resolution and anger management, and other life skills training. And then, in the afternoon we have football games that are currently ongoing right now."

Reporter
"Were you a part of the life skills training? Did you receive anything from it?"

Cheston Pouper - Participant
"Yes ma'am, I learned how to bond with the community, and I learned how deal with my situation a different kind of way."

Reporter
"Give a little example of what you will deal with differently because of the life skills classes."

Cheston Pouper
"Let's say someone and I are having a conflict, I could walk away instead of fighting with them or picking up a gun."

Shanikka Arnold - Camp Facilitator
"I led a group of about 15 - 18 boys discussing things such as conflict resolution, anger management, self-esteem, and doing various activities that encorporated these topics in order to give them better ways to deal with situations than they currently have. There is definitely a noticable change in their behavior as they came in, to them leaving. There was definitely a growth along the way. They came in knowing a lot about these situations and understanding that there are different ways to handle them, but not implementing them. But, as we went through the topics, and discussed each of them independently, they found that they can implement these in their daily lives and not be thought of as less of a man than they are now."

Almost 200 youths under the age of 18 participated in the camp at the Yabra Green...
