GSU Makes Major Contraband Bust
posted (August 18, 2011)
And speaking of contraband, an unlikely unit, the GSU has made a major bust of uncustomed liquor and other items. Yesterday evening at 5:00, the GSU searched Room # 5 of KETZ Apartment complex located on Lizarraga Avenue in Belize City. No one was inside the apartment but with a Landlord and a Justice of the Peace they gained entry.

Inside, the GSU found an assortment of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes stuffed in a black plastic case and a black carry-on travelling bag. They are believed to be Uncustomed Goods.

Here's what was found.

  • 48 Quarts Sunrise Wine
  • 26 Quarts black Label Whisky
  • 1 Liter Black Label Whisky
  • 6 Liters Baileys
  • 1 Quart Grey Goose Vodka
  • 8 Liters Absolut Vodka
  • 32 Cartons Marlboro Cigarettes
  • 11 Cartons Benson & Hedges Cigarettes
  • 3 Cartons VOGUE Cigarettes

Police report that the rental contract for the apartment and payment receipts were in the name of Ronnell GONZALES. The items have been handed over to Customs Investigation Unit for further action - which has confirmed that the items are uncustomed. The value is in the range of ten thousand dollars, and the fine will be about thirty thousand dollars.

According to the GSU, the trove of liquor and cigarettes is the product of a ring operating in Belize City smuggling these items from the Corozal Free zone.
