posted (August 25, 2011)
This year we have been reporting on an alarming number of armed holdups in Orange Walk, one of them turning deadly! Another such robbery happened on Tuesday. Taco Vendor, Maritza Vasquez reported to the police that whilst selling tacos on Baker Street in Orange Walk town, she was approached by two dark skinned men, both had their faces covered with red rags. One of the men armed with a handgun pointed it at her and robbed her of jewelry and a cell phone. Two minors accompanying the Vendor were also robbed of cash and a cell phone. No one has been detained.

And, 24 hours later, southwest of Orange Walk, in the border town of Benque Viejo del Carmen, two men were trying to jack a Chinese business establishment. Police responded to a robbery in process at Jimmy's restaurant on George Price boulevard. According to Benque Viejo police, businessman Zhiming Wu was about to enter his home shortly after closing his restaurant around 11:15 P.M., when he was attacked by two men, one armed with a 9 millimeter pistol. The gunman pointed the weapon at Wu and ordered him to open the store, and then proceeded to empty the cash register of an undisclosed sum of money. The men were spotted by police who set chase. One of the men was apprehended when he ran through the cemetery and was about to board a taxi. Police say they have detained Jerson Avantara of Belize City, and Gustavo Mai of Orange Walk who was driving a red Toyota Corolla bearing Taxi license plates. No one was injured in the incident.
