UWI Vice-Chancellor Visits
posted (September 6, 2011)
As part of the September Celebrations, the vice - chancellor of the University of the West Indies is in Belize. Professor E. Nigel Harris is here for the presentation of the first ever first ever UWI Alumni Association Pelican Awards which is given to alumni of the university.

Those include a cast of stars including the PM and the GG, but who will get this year's four awards? That's what we asked..

E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor, UWI position
"The Pelican Awards that we are having on Thursday night are really designed to recognize prominent members of our alumni community for their achievements. Achievements either within the context of Belize or achievements on a global scale and we believe this is important, we have some hundred thousand alumni, the University does now in the 62 years and we believe in every one of our 15 countries. There are a number of people to celebrate and this particular opportunity for us enables us if you will to show off to Belize some of our and your proud brothers".

Luz Longsworth, Director Open Campus
"These are the first Pelican Awards being held in Belize. The Pelican Awards is a signature award of the alumni association across the region but it has recently been open up so that in each of our countries Pelican Awards can be given. So this is quite a historic moment for us here in Belize to have the very first annual pelican awards, and of course the four persons have been outstanding graduates of the University of the West Indies and we are very proud that the Vice Chancellor was able to come to this very first award ceremony".

Jane Bennet, Head UWI Open campus, Belize
"There are four recipients who will be awarded on Thursday evening, one being the Governor General Sir. Colvin Young, Doctor Lenox Spike, Doctor Carla Barnett and the fourth one is Doctor Kenrick Leslie, so those will be the four recipients of the awards on Thursday evening at the Bliss Center at 7pm, it's a public event and so the public are invited to come out and support their fellow Belizeans who are being awarded for their contribution within their field in our country".

Vice Chancellor Harris will also be meeting with NGO's and other groups to discuss the University's future in Belize.
