Robbery at free zone
posted (September 12, 2011)
Tonight, three police officers are detained for an explosive case of armed robbery. It happened in the Corozal Free Zone on the evening of the tenth September.

At 5:15 pm, a dark skinned man walked into North America International Limited store and held up the cashier. She was counting sales at the time, and he reportedly robbed her of seventy thousand dollars. He then jumped into a waiting Geo Tracker. According to the Free Zone CEO, Raul Rosado, the storeowner called security and they locked down all exits from the zone - and intercepted the vehicle. But, somehow it seems they were released and because police say they picked them up the following day in Corozal. Here's what the police press officer had to say today:

Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"Two dark complexion male persons enter the store and she was held at gun point were an undisclosed amount of cash was rob from her. These men made good there escape. Through our investigations we have detained three police officers for questioning and if they are involved, then they will be charged. We are treating this report as any other robbery report and if needs be - they will be charged. No special privileges regardless if they are police officers or not. This is a robbery report and we will treat this report just the same as any other report."

Jules Vasquez
"But you will agree that if it's a case of police officers; A; involve in an arm robbery and B; using their security credentials to get into the free zone to be involved in a commission of a crime. It is outrageous in the extreme."

Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer
"Jules, as far as we know as this time the officers only stand accused, they haven't been charged. What if they are not involved any at all."

Police say they have impounded the getaway Geo Tracker, and have detained constable Elston Rojas - who is attached to the Corozal station and Rudolph Azueta who is attached to the San Pedro station. They have also detained another male persons of Belize City - and are trying to link him to another police officer who is known to have ties to a city gang that the current suspect associated with. That police officer was initially detained and has since released.

Reports are that a 45 pistol was used in the commission of the robbery - that is a high powered handgun which is prohibited in Belize.
