Brazil lecture
posted (September 12, 2011)
And the Celebrations continue tomorrow night with a discussion about independence at the Bliss Center. But it's not idle talk - the discussion will be led by a Brazilian expert on that country's independence.

They just celebrated their 189th anniversary last week Sunday and they've invited a guest to Belize to tell us how to make the great leap forward as they have:..

Pedro S. Etchebarne, Deputy Chief. Brazilian Embassy
"We can learn from our mistakes, we can learn from our experience, we can have an experience to share - to humbly share with friends. Not long ago we were not very accredited as a country and it took us time."

Bert Tucker, Bz Ambassador of Foreign Trade? Eco Dev.
"Belize at this stage, on the 30th anniversary of its Independence is celebrating, observing and trying to learn, better on how to consolidate that independence. Part of that will be from internal and part from external friendships and experiences. Having this Brazilian lecture this time gives us additional insight into the processes that countries have to go through to consolidate their independence, and it gives us a better time frame - a better realization and appreciation of both the forward and backward movements that you have to go through to eventually settle at something that is stable and is ok for your people."

Pedro S. Etchebarne, Deputy Chief. Brazilian Embassy
"You're a young country and you can be a big country because, we as Brazilians believe that the size of the country is in the heart you have - the values, the multi-cultural, the multi ethnicity, the good values the core principles that you have."

Laurentiono Gomez, Expert on Brazilian Independence
"20 years ago Brazil was also very much closed country with a lot of poor people, land concentration, illiteracy with an authoritarian history and nowadays we have democracy. We are trying to promote people, empowering people - giving them education and healthcare opportunities and I think this is the true independence, I mean to promote people in terms of citizenship and I think this is the challenge for every single country - how to promote their own people in order to be independent in terms of citizenship."

The lecture - slash - discussion starts at 7:00 pm at the Bliss Center.
