Another Bus Accident...
posted (September 15, 2011)
Two days ago there was a major bus collision on the Western Highway - and because of that, one woman, Nicole Sabal remains hospitalized tonight.

Today, there was another bus accident in the Belize District - but this one was no collision; it happened when a McFadzean bus lost control because the steering broke!

What happened after that is an accident all right - but it's also a miracle it wasn't worse. Jim McFadzean was there:..

Jim McFadzean Reporting
The 56 seater passenger bus with St. Paul's Bank as its final destination was just entering the village of Buttercup, when driver, Lee McFadzean suddenly realized he had lost all control.

Jim McFadzean
"So you were entering the village of Buttercup, is that when you realized that you were losing control of the bus?"

Lee McFadzean, Driver of Bus
"Yes that was when I realized I was losing control of the bus, when I was turning the steering I just realized that i didn't have no control of the bus."

Jim McFadzean
"So what happened, did the bus just veer off to the left of the road?"

Lee McFadzean, Driver of Bus
"Yes the bus just veer off to the left and went over a culvert and into a ditch and off into a yard."

And, if not for the culvert providing a useful buffer, the runaway bus might have, or, just could have ended up plowing through this residence that sits just off the Boom road. And, with 20 passengers on board, the outcome could have been much worse.

Jim McFadzean
"Once the bus came to a complete halt, you got up and I assume you were checking to see if anyone was injured?"

Lee McFadzean, Driver of Bus
"Yes that is what I did, I just got up and went to the back and I check and they were two people that were injured way at the back of the bus. I guess that was when I went over the culvert and the bus slammed off the culvert I think that is when they got hurt."

Jim McFadzean
"Any idea what caused you to lose steering of the bus?"

Lee McFadzean, Driver of Bus
"Will, I am not sure at this time, I just know that the steering went out, I turn left I turn right and there was no steering. I went over a culvert and into a ditch so it's not so easy to say what happened at this time."

No word yet on the condition of the two injured passengers, the remaining passengers were boarded on another McFadzean bus headed to their final destination. Reporting for Seven News, I'm Jim McFadzean.

And late word tonight on the two injured passengers, both residents of Rancho Dolores, is that 38 year old Daria Thompson, who complained of pain to the hips and 18 year old Shannen Pook, who complained of pain to the neck are listed in stable condition at the KHMH. Driver, Lee McFadzean received a cut wound to his left elbow.
