Uncle Sam Says Belize Poses Drug Danger
posted (September 15, 2011)
Belize Police may have stumbled upon a failed drug transfer in November - which netted them 2,604 kilos, one of the biggest drug busts in history.

But it seems Uncle Sam is not impressed. The Washington Post this evening reported that the Obama administration has added Belize and El Salvador to the U.S. list of "major" drug producing and transit countries.

According to an Associated Press report, the addition of Belize and El Salvador reflects increasing drug trafficking through Central America.

Police and Public Safety Minister Doug Singh declined comment this evening. The annual list identifies countries playing a role in the drug trade that quote, "significantly affect the United States." Twenty-two nations made the list, including veterans such as Colombia and Mexico.

Three countries were judged to have "failed demonstrably" on their antidrug efforts last year; they are, Bolivia, Burma and Venezuela. These countries may face U.S. sanctions as a result.
