And while that teenager faces a grim prognosis, another in Cayo, a female, 19 year old is dead.
Her death though was not gang violence; it appears to have been a crime of passion allegedly executed by a crazed lover who killed her then tried to kill himself.
It happened on Friday night - and Monica Bodden went to San Ignacio to find out more:..

19 year old Maritza Santos was murdered in this concrete house - located behind the Kontiki Area in San Ignacio Town - It happened around 7:15 on Friday night. She was found dead on a bed in one of the bedrooms.
She had a large cut wound to the right side of her forehead and a pillow was found covering her face. She was bleeding from her head.
Found inside the kitchen was a quart of paraquat herbicide and 9 slips of paper with notes on them.
Apparently her boyfriend 26 year old businessman Michael Silva -son of the former Minister of Agriculture Dan Silva - murdered the young woman and then tried killing himself my ingesting the Herbicide.
He was rushed to the Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City - where he remains hospitalized.

"What happen on Friday the 23rd of September, about 7:10 pm information was received of which police acted and they visited the residence where Michael Silva was residing in the Kontiki Area of San Ignacio Town. Where upon arrival they saw the body of a female later identified as Maritza Santos, 19 years old domestic of Hill View area of San Ignacio Town in one of the bedrooms apparently dead with a large wound to the right side of her forehead. Also in the house was observed a quart of paraquat 20 SC herbicide of which police has taken into custody as exhibit."
"Further information obtained by the police stated that Michael Silva, 26 years old Belizean businessman of the Kontiki Area have been taken to the Belize Healthcare Partners in Belize City to undergo treatment for ingesting paraquat. As far as we are concern he still remains at that medical institution and the investigation continues."
Police did not comment on whether were reports of an argument between the couple that evening. They would only say that it will unfold as they continue their investigations.
But what we gathered from neighbors is that the two would only be seen at the house from time to time and they did not reside there as a couple.

"We receive the news on Friday night, they gave me a call and told me that she was dead. I couldn't believe it because she was always there for us. The three of us was always together; she was very attentive, loving and caring. She meant everything to us. She recently graduated from high school and wanted to continue her studies. She was working when that happen. It's sad for the family and her friends. I heard that it was her boyfriend, but I am not sure. It happens at his house."

"No, they were just starting to date."

"She live here with you guys?"

"Yes she lives here."
According to the victim's older sister, Santos had only been dating Silva for about a month.
The last time she saw her sister alive was on Thursday- and she said at the time she seemed very unhappy and troubled.

"On Thursday evening."

"That day she was very sad and she told me that she had many things to tell but she never find the time to be alone with me to tell me because he was everywhere with her."

"You think that she may have been getting abused?"

"I think so, that's what she wanted to tell me but she never got around to tell me because..."

"They were together for like one month and 8 days."
19 year old Maritza Santos - recently graduated this year from Eden Seventh Day Adventist High School. Like any other ambitious teenager, she had dreams - which she will never get to live out.

"The family has to unite and be together. We didn't expect something like this from him. He showed us like he care about her, like he love her. We didn't expect something like this from him, but expect the unexpected."
According to police, Michael Silva remains hospitalized in a serious condition at a private hospital in Belize City.
