Bze-Guat Referendum in 2013?
posted (November 29, 2011)
The Chiquibul may be under siege from Guatemalans, but yesterday in Washington DC, things were described as cordial and cooperative when Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington met with his Guatemalan counterpart, Haroldo Rodas Melgar, under the auspices of the OAS and its Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza,

According to an official jointly approved release from the OAS The Foreign Ministers quote, "underscored the effective and efficient work of the OAS Office in the Adjacency Zone."

But, our sources say, the Adjacency office is also low on funding, and that why both Ministers agreed to convene, along with the OAS, a meeting of the Group of Friends in Guatemala City on December 12, 2011. That Group of Friends fund the confidence building effort and it comprises, Canada, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

According to the release, The OAS Secretary General welcomed a, quote, "renewed commitment of the Foreign Ministers" to comply with the terms of the December 2008, Special Agreement - known also as the compromis. That put things on track for simultaneous referenda in both countries.

The release announces - and this is the news - that the OAS Secretary General will convene a bilateral meeting immediately after the general election in Belize, with a view to holding the referenda before the end of the year 2013.
