River Of Fire Releases Poem Collection
posted (January 24, 2012)
He is known for riding around town on his bicycle selling pepitos and fudge; but that's not all River of Fire is known for. He is also one of Belize's most talented poets. Today we caught up with him at the San Pedro Water Taxi, where he was heading to the cayes to promote his latest book. It is called -The Fruit of the tree- the second part of a 7 series collection. It features a myriad of poetry styles all revolving around the theme of love. Here is what the poet told us about his work:

Monica Bodden
"Tell us a little bit about this book of poetry that you brought out."

River of Fire
"This book is basically the second in a series of works. There are 7 pieces that I have written in my lifetime; 34 years of poetry. This book is the second part of that 7 part series. The first was the CD "Out on a limb" which was published in 2004."

"This book is 38 pieces of poetry; 28 of them are acrostic, 9 free styles and 1 song. It's dedicated to Cheikh Anta Diop who was my mentor as a young man. This is the second work; there are 7. "Out on a limb" was angrier, more aggressive kind of poetry. This is more love. The first half of the book is general love to children, family, father, community, country and places in Belize. Then the second half is romantic love between man and a woman."

Monica Bodden
"What's the name of the book?"

River of Fire
"The name of the book is "Fruit of the tree." The pictures on the book are of me and my daughter Jen, and on the back is a picture of me and my other daughter. The "Fruit of the Tree" refers to - I am the tree and the fruit of the tree are the girls, the children that I produce because that's going to be my lineage and my life and where my fruit will grow. They will produce my offspring, and so the book is basically about my experiences, my life, inspired by other people. Every poem in the book has a name under it other than mine, and that's the person that inspired the poem."
