FINED 10K FOR DRUGS....(update)
posted (January 31, 2012)
Late this afternoon, Idolly Neal, a 19-year-old former sixth form student from Orange Walk, returned before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer to receive her sentence after she was found guilty of drug trafficking.

On January 26, 2011, at around 5 a.m., Police stopped a bus at the Crooked Tree Junction on the Northern Highway. The officer entered onto the bus and was greeted by the strong, pungent smell of marijuana.

He went to investigate, and discovered that there was package of 200 grams of marijuana inside a knapsack which was sitting on Neal's lap. Neal was immediately arrested and charged for drug trafficking, and during her arraignment at Court, she pleaded not guilty to the charge.

However, during the investigating officer's testimony after the trial had started, she admitted to the court that she had possession of the bag, but that it was not hers. She claimed that the bag was given to her by an unidentified man, who she never identified to the court. She claims that the person told her to hold on the bag for him until further instruction. She also claimed that she didn't know what was in the bag.

She then changed her plea to guilty, and Senior Magistrate Frazer allowed her an adjournment to consider the true implications of the consequences if she is found guilty. She came back to court today and maintained her plea saying that she wanted the matter over with. Since she was a first-time offender, Senior Magistrate Frazer sentenced her to pay a fine of $10,000 to be paid by April 30th, or she will spend 3 years imprisonment in default.

In her mitigation to the court, she said that due to the drug trafficking charge hanging over her head, she had not been able to finish school because she was unable to focus on her classes due to the worry.
