UDP Comment on Schakron's Dual Citizenship
posted (February 13, 2012)
Schakron's opponent Mark King is one man who seems hardly excited about the disclosure of the fact that his opponent is a Guatemalan-born Belizean-American.

We spoke to him on the campaign trail yesterday and he said it doesn't matter much to him:

Mark King - UDP Candidate, Lake Independence
"Jules, like I said, in regards to her being a Guatemalan at birth and also having US Citizenship, I am not jumping on that to say that I care for that, or I don't care for that. That is their problem; the PUP should have done their due diligence on the candidate that they would put up for the General Elections against me."

Dean Barrow - Party Leader, UDP
"If she is a dual citizen, does she renounce her American Citizenship? I believe that that would get her over the hump. Does she try to brazen it out and nevertheless offer herself for nomination knowing then that even if she wins, she is going to be disqualified? The cases in the Caribbean all make it inexorably clear that you cannot hold a seat in parliament if you are a dual citizen. So, it will be fascinating. I do think that already, she is caught, and her party is caught by the fact that Mrs. Schakron can't say that she didn't realize the implications of being a dual citizen. Not to have told her party, not to have told the people in Lake I is something that I think is going to have serious consequences for her and for her party."

Jules Vasquez
"And are you confident that there are no such personalities in your party who may have dual citizenship."

Dean Barrow
"Absolutely. There had been some rumors about Santi Castillo. I spoke to him last night, and he confirmed that he has never been a dual citizen. There was a time when he did in fact possess a green card, which he gave up long before he even got into politics."
