PUP Leader: There are Dual Citizenship Holders In UDP Also
posted (February 13, 2012)
And now that the matter of dual citizenship is a live one - PUP Leader Francis Fonseca says he's glad because he feels there are dual citizens in the mix of UDP candidates as well.

He said as much at the press conference today. Here are those remarks:

Francis Fonseca - Leader of the People's United Party
"I did not see the news, but I understand that the matter was raised by Mr. Jules Vasquez on his television station. Mrs. Schakron can respond - and I will allow her to respond to that matter - but I don't think the UDP will be very pleased with Mr. Vasquez for raising that matter because, what we are going to insist - what we are going to insist on this is that if they're going to have standards and rules that they want to apply to Mrs. Yolanda Schakron, then those rules and standards will have to apply to candidates of the United Democratic Party as well. We are aware of the law. I'm aware of Mrs. Schakron's status, and I'm absolutely confident that we will move forward without any problems in that regard. We will be in compliance with the law, and we will ensure that nobody - nobody - especially agents of the UDP, try to intimidate Mrs. Yolanda Schakron who is a strong, credible woman candidate."

Two UDP candidates about whom the nationality issue has been raised are Elvin Penner and Li Mark Chang.

Both issues have come up before, but still we followed up on them today: Penner today told us today that his parents are Canadian, but he was born in Spanish Lookout and has only ever held a Belizean passport - and never a Canadian passport.

Li Mark Chang also told us that he is a born Belizean - and does not hold any foreign passport. He said if anyone can prove that he does have one, he'll step down.
