posted (February 14, 2012)
45 year-old Patrick August, a Belize City boat captain, was convicted of indecent assault in the court room of Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith today. He was charged with 3 counts of indecent assault and one count of using threatening words which he committed against a female minor, who was 13 years-old at the time.

According to the police, the minor reported that in December 2010 and April 2011, August fondled her. The minor also told police that in January of 2011, August did it again.

The minor further alleged that August tried to keep her quiet by threatening her saying, quote, "Don't tell anybody, otherwise I will kill you." Unquote.

After the minor gave her testimony in closed court, August told the court that he was being framed for these offenses, and that he did not commit any of the acts that the minor alleged.

Chief Magistrate Smith handed down her verdict that he was guilty of all charges. For the charge of using threatening words, he was reprimanded and warned by the court. For the December 2010 and April 2011 offenses, however, he was sentenced to 3 consecutive years of imprisonment, respectively.

For the January 2011 offense, he was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, which is to run concurrently with the other two sentences. As a result, he now has 6 years of imprisonment which he must serve.
