posted (February 21, 2012)
22 year-old Mark Ramdas, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, has been remanded for allegedly committing armed robbery after he appeared in Magistrate's Court.

According to police, the Gang Suppression Unit conducted a search on a residence at #39 Albert Street West yesterday.

Present at the time were Ramdas, who is employed as a messenger; his mother, Elizabeth Bowen, a 43 year-old babysitter; and his girlfriend, Etelina Mejia, an 18 year-old unemployed.

Nothing was found in the building, but when police began searching the yard, Ramdas told the officers that he was in possession of marijuana.

The officers found a plastic bag with the marijuana near the house's fence. It was weighed and determined to be approximately 5.22 ounces.

As a result, all three people were arrested and jointly charged with drug trafficking.

In court Ramdas pleaded guilty to the charge, but when Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer asked him if he knew that the offence carried a maximum penalty of 3 years and a $10,000 fine, he explained to the magistrate that he was only taking the plea to get his girlfriend and mother off the charge. He explained that the marijuana was not his and that it was placed there earlier.

It was at that point that Senior Magistrate Frazer entered him into an equivocal not guilty plea. She was about to make a determination on the sum of their bail when the prosecution informed the court that another charge was being brought against Ramdas.

It was alleged that on February 18, He robbed Fredrick Trapp of $750 at gunpoint.

This changed the situation altogether and Ramdas immediately became ineligible for bail. He was remanded into custody until April 10.

His girlfriend and mother were granted bail in the sum of $6,000 plus two sureties. They must also return to court on April 10.
