After a 2-month trial, 30 year-old Denroy Williams has been found guilty of trafficking 19 pounds of cannabis. He will spend 3 years in prison for this his second drug trafficking conviction.
He was jointly charged with his brother, 28 year-old Micah Lee Williams, and their friend, 26 year-old Shawn Whitaker,
According to police, on March 2, 2010 at around 8 p.m., the Gang Supression Unit began trailing behind a vehicle reportedly belonging to Micha Lee Williams from Roaring Creek to Hattieville Village.
Things got interesting when the vehicle blew past a police checkpoint on the Western Highway in front of the Hattieville Police Station. The GSU chased the vehicle which tried to escape on the Hattieville/Boom Road.
This vehicle then blew through a second checkpoint which was set up as a sting operation by the Anti-Drug Unit.
These two units then chased the vehicle to a section on the road where it was alleged that 2 bags were dumped off.
One of the trailing units doubled back and recovered them, and it was determined that the package was the 19 pounds of marijuana.
Police finally caught up to the vehicle which was abandoned to the side of the road, and they immediately arrested Denroy Williams who was found inside. 2 of the suspects fled into the bushes and escaped before police caught the vehicle.
Police investigation led them to arrest and charged Micah Lee Williams and Shawn Whitaker at a later date.
We fast-forward to 2 months ago, when the trial started in the courtroom of Magistrate Hettie Mae Stuart.
The prosecution called several of the responding officers from the GSU and the ADU to give testimony against the 3 accused.
Micah Lee Williams' attorney, Anthony Sylvester, provided a defense for all 3 accused, and he was able to get the testifying officers to admit under cross-examination that due to the dark conditions of the road, they could not provide a positive ID on Micah Lee Williams and Shawn Whitaker.
As a result, when the prosecution closed their case, he made a no-case submission that his client, along with Whitaker, had no evidence presented against them, so they should be discharged.
Today, after 2 weeks of consideration, Magistrate Stuart upheld that submission and acquitted Micah Lee Williams and Shawn Whitaker.
In the case of Denroy Williams, police say that he gave them a sworn statement in which he admitted that he had knowledge that cannabis was in the vehicle where he was found. This statement, along with the positive ID from several of the testifying officers, led to his eventual conviction today.
Denroy Williams has 1 previous conviction for drug trafficking and 4 for drug possession. Due to his history, Magistrate Stuart's hands were tied when she sentenced him to spend 3 years in prison and to pay a fine of $10,000.
Shawn Whitaker is currently serving 3 years in prison for a separate drug trafficking conviction, and as a result, he remains on remand.
Micah Lee Williams had no pending matters so he was able to walk out of court a free man.
