GSU Charges Ten For Two Ounces Of Weed
posted (July 6, 2012)
The GSU arrested 10 persons after finding a total of 92 grammes -less than three ounces of marijuana at a Belize City residence yesterday.

The unit searched the residence of Victor LYONS at #100 Cemetery road where they looked inside an old washing machine and found a plastic bag with 55 grammes of cannabis.

As a result, all ten persons were arrested and jointly charged with Possession of Control Drugs. All 10 persons appeared before Magistrate Hamilton in Court #6 this morning. Victor Lyons, the homeowner, pleaded guilty to the charge saying that he did so only because the drugs were found at his house.

Because of this, the prosecution did not withdraw the charge against the other 9 men, and Magistrate Hamilton granted them bail of $2,000 dollars.

Lyons was sentenced to a fine of $1,000 which he must pay by September 21 or spend 1 year in prison by default. The matter has been adjourned until August 6.

A search of Michael GRAHAM - who was on the property turned up a transparent plastic bag with another 37 grams of cannabis. He was arrested and charged for possession of controlled drugs.

And last night at 11:00, the GSU went to search the Belize Central prison. They teamed up with the K9 Unit and the Kolbe Foundation QRT team to search the facility - mostly the remand section - for three hours. They were looking for telephones used by prisoner, improvised knives known as "bowras" and drugs.

In the end, they found a total of 5 grams of suspected crack cocaine, six cellular phones and five SIM cards along with other items used as bow-ras.

On a lighter note, several containers of home-made wine were also seized from the cells.
