The Social Security Board says the Orange Walk Town Council owes it $13,000
and now the SSB is going to court to get its money. In September, the SSB sent
what's called a garnishment order to the town council demanding $13,487.80 plus
ten percent interest.
The town council has been given time to pay the arrears but if it doesn't, under
law the SSB can garnish the money from other source. One of the likely options
will be government's monthly subvention to the council. Orange Walk's Mayor
Ravell Gonzalez is quoted in the media in Orange Walk as saying that his council
has already made two payments to the SSB. We could not reach Gonzalez and no
one at Social Security would confirm that to us today.
A Social Security source did say that garnishment orders are routine and the
town council was not singled out.
