Cristo Rey Village is just a few miles outside of Santa Elena Town and,
like most villages, it's a quiet place - not known for the ghastly crimes so
common in the population centers. But last night, the still of the Cristo Rey
night was shattered by the report of a single gunshot. That shot went straight
to the head of a 17 year old girl who, her family says was churchgoing and homely.
So why did it happen? The family says it's the product of a long-standing
dispute with their cousins who live right next to them. Could a family dispute
turn so ugly? We went looking for answers.
Jules Vasquez Reporting,
This is 17-year-old Pricilla Tzib. She was killed last night, here, executed
by two men in her family's yard in Cristo Rey Village.
Antonina Aguierre, Sister of Deceased
"They shot her right here."
This is her big sister, Antonina Aguirre. She says at 7:30 the men moved into
the yard with swift and decisive force. First they kicked open this door, and
when they found no one inside, they went over to the next house, where all the
Tzib women were gathered preparing dinner:
Antonina Aguirre,
"They pointed the gun in my mom's forehead and they forced her on the
floor and then they put her inside and took out all of us from inside and pointed
the gun at all of us and they just hauled my little sister and they took her
back there in the dark and then I just heard the gunshots. I don't know why
they killed my little sister." [Sobbing]
What were they looking for?
Jules Vasquez,
They said they were looking for Angel?
Antonina Aguirre,
"I don't know who is Angel Tzib."
Jules Vasquez,
So you don't know who it is, it is not your uncle?
Antonina Aguirre,
"No, not my uncle. I think they were looking for my sister in law but
they just said they were looking for Angel Tzib."
The family believes that Angel Tzib is just a name the intruders used. They
believe the men were looking for this woman, Consuelo Tzib - the sister in law
of Pricilla. Today this mother of three agreed and she says it is all because
of jealousy.
Consuelo Tzib, Sister in law of Deceased
"It is pure envy by my neighbors. As I have said, they don't want me
because I am Guatemalan and I married their cousin. I don't know if they wanted
him for themselves. I don't know."
Ignacio Reyes is a cousin. She's been watching the dispute between Consuelo
and her in-laws cousins for two years.
Ignacio Reyes, Cousin of Deceased
"They went to court already, they summoned my cousin for holding the
girl when she and the girl fought and the girl got cut and they took my cousin.
She summoned my cousin and she had to pay doctor bills and all and she summoned
my cousin for $4,000 and when they went to court, the girl lost the case and
this girl won the case and I think it is because of that they did it because
I think it is because of revenge they did it."
Jules Vasquez,
You think they came last night to kill her?
Ignacio Reyes,
"They came last night to kill her but like how they didn't find her,
they killed the little young girl. I don't know but from since my cousin took
that girl it has been a lot of problem. They go to court. They fight almost
every week. They stone each other."
Jules Vasquez,
What are the sources of the fight?
Ignacio Reyes,
"The source of the fight are when my cousin got in with this girl but
what they are fighting for, I don't know."
Jules Vasquez,
She is saying that how they wanted her husband for themselves.
Ignacio Reyes,
"Maybe. The way how I see them fight about it, anybody would think they
want their cousin for themselves. I know he is my cousin but I don't believe
I would fight for my own cousin either as a man because he is my cousin."
Enrique Aldana, Investigating Officer
"The matter is under investigation. If any evidence is gathered that
they are the ones who did it, charges will be brought against them. At the moment
we have three suspects in custody. The investigation is still ongoing."
Jules Vasquez,
What would the motive for an execution of a teenage girl in Cristo Rey?
Enrique Aldana,
"
The matter is under investigation."
And while at this point no one can say for certain what was the motivation
for the ruthless killing, all agree they killed a blameless observer.
Consuelo Tzib,
"We don't know why it is her they killed. We ask ourselves why her.
She didn't interfere with anyone. She used to go to church. Why her? She doesn't
go out of the house, she doesn't even have a boyfriend. I believe that they
were looking for me but God is great. He knows that I have three kids. He didn't
want me to abandon my children because they are young. That is all I can say."
Police have one person detained, and say off the record that they expect
to make an arrest. Those investigators are not quite as confident about the
multiple homicide in Blackman Eddy Village where a family of six was burnt to
death in their home. The watchman for the area remains detained, and police
say one more man, a Unitedville villager has been detained.
