Trial without Jury For Alleged Killer Of Andre Trapp
posted (January 29, 2013)
In June of 2010, the story made the headlines of all the media houses when Andre Trapp, the reputed leader of the Southside Gangsters was killed in front of the Magistrate's Court.

That incident made a major impact because of the ruthless efficiency in which it was conducted, and more importantly, because it happened near the courthouse, the seat of the judiciary, which represents law and order.

Well, the man who has since been on remand for that murder is now standing trial - but he's doing so without the benefit of a jury. Nicholi Rhys, who police caught near the scene the same day, stood before the Chief Justice, Kenneth Benjamin, this morning for the beginning of his trial without jury.

Simeon Sampson is representing him, and Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl Lynn Vidal is prosecuting the case. She told the court that she intends to call 11 witnesses who will attempt to satisfy the requirements to prove that Rhys is guilty of the crime, based purely on circumstantial evidence, and an alleged oral confession. She informed the court that her office will not be able to provide any witness who can definitively point to Rhys as the gunman.

Vidal called a total of 6 witnesses today, and she intends to finish with her case tomorrow, after which Rhys will be given an opportunity to defend himself.

The trial is the second without jury in Belize history. In this case - we presume there is no jury because it involves the killing of a gang leader.
