Micah Tillet’s Attorney Says "Not So"
posted (March 14, 2013)
On Tuesday's Newscast, we told you about 18 year-old Micah Tillett, the man who police say was caught with money believed to be the proceeds of a robbery in Ladyville, which happened last week Friday.

According to police, 3 armed men robbed a delivery man and his companion in Ladyville and fled in a vehicle, which they pursued all the way to Chetumal Street in Belize City.

Again, according to police, when they finally cornered the vehicle, several men fled the vehicle and escaped, but they allegedly caught Tillett inside allegedly with some of the stolen money.

Tillett was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, and he was arraigned on Tuesday. Tillett has kept his silence on the matter, but yesterday, his attorney spoke to 7News and told us that he wants to clear up a few things that he says the police are reporting erroneously.

Here's what he had to say:

Bryan Neal - Attorney for Micah Tillett
"Well first of all he is a 6th form student, and I am instructed to say that he was not found with proceeds from any crime. In fact, he was found with $13 dollars - one, three, a 10 dollar and 3 dollar coins - in his pocket; there were no - there was no robbery money in his vehicle when he was found by the police. What he has said to me is that he was on the Northern Highway testing out his vehicle from a mechanic, when he was pulled over by the police. He said the police cannot say that any men jumped out of his vehicle, and he also said that he was alone just test driving his vehicle. So, he knows nothing of a robbery and he just wants the record to be corrected, so that he can go back to school and feel comfortable. I notice from the charge sheet in court, that the robbery allegedly occurred in Ladyvile. He was apprehended maybe about 6 to 7 miles away from where the robbery actually occurred - allegedly occurred."

Daniel Ortiz
"So what in your best information sir, what sort of individual is Mr. Micah Tillett?"

Bryan Neal
"Well he has no previous convictions. He is a young man that goes to 6th form; in fact, he is studying criminology and he has said he wants to study law. I know him as a good fellow. I know his family and I think he is a decent Belizean. And above all, he is entitled to be innocent until proven guilty."

Daniel Ortiz
"Well, sir I must ask, have the police in any of the charges claimed that any of these men supposedly fled his vehicle?"

Bryan Neal
"The charge sheet said Micah Tillett and others; in fact the police have not apprehended anyone else for this crime, and it seems that they have decided to pin it on my client."

We also tried to probe the issue a bit deeper, but because the matter is still before the court, and may be subjected to prejudice, his attorney refrained from commenting further until the courts are finished...
