He is a police constable accused of committing murder in the line of duty and
today Sheldon Arzu took the stand and said it was self-defense.
Arzu is charged for the 2003 shooting death of Reuben "Pony" Alarcon
inside the Caye Caulker Police Station. He gave sworn testimony from the witness
stand and told the court this morning that he fired off the shots because Alarcon
and another prisoner were advancing towards him in a threatening manner. He
said the other prisoner held a machete while Alarcon pushed his hand inside
his pocket as if he was pulling out a weapon. That is when constable arzu says
he pulled out his service revolver and fired two shots in the direction of the
prisoners. Arzu was cross-examined this afternoon and the defense is expected
to call a constable who was on duty at the time of the fatal shooting.
On Friday prosecutor Kamar Henry closed her case after calling 12 witnesses.
The 12 jurors took a trip to the crime scene at Caye Caulker police station
on Friday morning. Arzu is defended by Linsbert Willis.
