As you saw at the top of the news, today, the Prime Minister held a press conference to talk about the take-over of the offshore registries – but he also took time to address topics of public interest. First, is the case of the Guatemalan civilian shot by Belize security personnel in the Chiquibul one week ago. His name is Edgar Alexander Alveno and he was shot in the Caballo Camp area of Chiquibul. The Prime Minister today told the media that Alveno fired first:

"After Mr. Alveno had fired on the BDF patrol, they returned fire and Mr. Alveno was shot. Members of the Patrol disarmed him, searched and found two cell phones, one 22 rifle and 11 rounds of ammunition. He received 4 shots - the BDF medics who are obviously outstanding attended to him, tried to bind up his wounds, it took a while given where they were to walk and carry him to a point where the ambulance was waiting to take him to a hospital - this process lasted about 12 hours. The medics did such a good job that he was taken to the hospital, surgery was done on him and he is now in a critical but stable condition."
A joint verification team including the Guatemalans and the OAS has confirmed that the shooting occurred within Belize. The PM says he expects minimal fallout if Alveno survives.
