Belizean Student Dies In Taiwan Cycle Accident
posted (June 14, 2013)
Tonight a family in the Cayo district is making preparations to bring their loved one home – after Clarencio Coc died in Taiwan where the 26 year old was on an academic scholarship.

According to reports posted by Belizean students in Taiwan on Facebook, last night in Pingtung, Taiwan, Coc was on the back of a motor scooter driven by a Guatemalan student, Mervin Hernandez when it was hit by an out of control car.

Hernandez was reportedly crushed under the car while Coc flew into a ditch. It was in a heavy rain, so he was reportedly carried downstream – and rescuers took some time to find his body. But by the time they did, he had already drowned.

The accident is reported to have happened near the entrance to their school, the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology.

Charge d' Affairs at the Belize Embassy in Taiwan Cherie Nisbet told us an hour ago – which is Saturday morning in Taiwan 0 that she was taking the train three hours south to Pingtung to confirm what happened, and make arrangements to have his body returned to Belize.

She says he has been on a scholarship in Taiwan since 2010.
