Man Gets Five Years For Gun
posted (June 17, 2013)
25 year-old Randy Wagner Jones, a resident of Mopan Street, is spending the first night of a 5 year sentence after he was convicted in Magistrate's Court today.

2 police officers testified in his trial before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith that on September 8, 2012, they saw when Jones pulled out a gun from his pants waist and threw it away at the corner of Mopan and Mahogany Streets. The officers detained him, retrieved the gun, and discovered that it was a 9mm pistol, loaded with 9 live rounds of ammunition. As a result, they charged him with keeping an unlicensed firearm, and keeping unlicensed ammunition.

In his defence, he told the court that indeed, he was there as the police officers testified, but he didn't have any gun, and neither did he throw anything away. He also asked the court to consider that the scenes of crime personnel could not find any fingerprints on the gun which matched. This followed a testimony from a technician that the gun's materials proved difficult to lift fingerprints without special equipment.

After considering all the evidence, Chief Magistrate Smith found him guilty of the offences, and she sentenced him to serve 5 years for both counts, which will run concurrently. As a result, he will only serve 5 years in prison.
