Church: What the Gender Policy Really Means
posted (June 26, 2013)
7News has been closely following the discussion in relation to the Gender Policy, to find out what form it will take when it's finally completed.

Well, members of the Churches have complained loudly that it is loaded with items which they feel gives the LGBT population excessive rights as only one of the minority groups being discriminated against.

Last night, the personalities who've taken the forefront of speaking out on behalf of the church gave a seminar to a large gathering of Leaders of the different denominations.

7News attended, and we found out how this consultation has been going:

Pastor Scott Stirm - Jubilee Ministries/Belize Action
"The elders leaders we have called forth from whole of Belize district, as many as possibly could from Biscayne southward, from Gracie Rock and Hattieville and over - there were a lot of leaders that weren't able to make it tonight but we're in touch with them by email and them being informed. But in the bottom line there are a lot of leaders and people that really don't understand what's the big deal behind the gender policy so tonight was to do a little bit of awareness for them but also for us to connect together for mobilizing."

Louis Wade - Talkshow Host, Rise and Shine
"What we saw here tonight is representative of what we've been meeting around the country, we have had meetings in Orange Walk, in San Pedro, Dangriga, Punta Gorda, San Ignacio, Belmopan and this is our first meeting in Belize City. We had well over 200 pastors and leaders from Belize City alone, I have not spoken ever to so many Belize City pastors and leaders in one area. The information that we gave tonight gives a broad over view of what has been happening around the world in this issue because it's not isolated and it also speaks about where we are currently and where we hope to be. It was very well received, I was very impressed with the questions and comments coming from leaders as they approach the microphone and it only goes to show that the leaders, some of them community leaders, the resolve is clear that as it pertains to individuals - we will continue to love and show love but as it pertains to the agenda, we need to continue to strongly reject it."

Pastor Scott Stirm
"A lot of people haven't had the facts of the gender policy to know what's behind that so that's what tonight was about, to actually go into the pages of the gender policy and let people be able to see for themselves. A lot of it, even as the teacher's union had mentioned, the ambiguous terminology in there - there are so many loaded phrases with no examples of what it is they are talking about. That just raises tremendous suspicion."

Stirm and Wade say that they will continue to hold seminars to inform members of the churches across the country.
