Council Of Churches Distances Itself From Constitution Marches
posted (July 9, 2013)
But, while Pastor Scott Stirm, Louis Wade and Patrick Menzies were making final preparations for the march in San Ignacio, members of the Council of Churches were on LOVE FM's morning show.

The topic of the march came up and they were asked by the hosts about the message being sent by this one, the previous ones and those still to come.

When asked directly about it, the members made a clear indication that they haven't weighed in on this issue as yet.

Rev. Roosevelt Papouloute - President, Methodist Conference: Belize and Honduras
"Since end of May the revised policy has been part of the discussion throughout the nation - we as a council we have not been as public as some people expected us to be."

Ernesto Vasquez
"You need to clear that up for us though. I think what the people are seeing is the church, I mean they are having a rally today in San Ignacio, they had one in PG a few days ago and Orange Walk. So this is all church related and we would see that as you all have the same message. "

Rev. Roosevelt Papouloute
"Well we are here and we're going to express our thoughts and decisions, the way forward as we see it as a concept. So yesterday we met and we looked at the policy as a body and first we want to say that as far as we are concerned the policy has some very good things in it that we as a council felt that will be of good importance. To know that some people tend to say that we throw it in a box and eliminate it - that it doesn't serve purpose, we felt that there were good things in the policy, it's a broad policy that covers a lot of issues and concerns and different groups and it affects and addresses different issues about education and health and economic development. In any documents we will not create a perfect document so there are things that need to be addressed so as we come...."

Ernesto Vasquez
"Let me get this clear - as far as again - the churches have asked for the complete withdrawal of the gender policy. This is what we're hearing and in fact that is what we see on the science, what is happening with the momentum so remove it, we don't want it, it's not good. Am I getting a different message from you?"

Rev. Roosevelt Papouloute
"Well that is one thing we wanted to clear is that one of our concerns that we met yesterday is regarding those who claim to speak in the name of the church. Generally speaking we have two bodies here in Belize that form - the Belize Council of Churches and the Belize Evangelical Association and as far as I'm concerned this is the first time you are hearing from us as the Belize Council of Churches."
