Men Fired From Prison Claim Wrongful Dismissal
posted (July 17, 2013)
7News has been closely following the termination of employees of the Kolbe Foundation Prison. It has sparked a libel suit in the Supreme Court between the Administration and a group of employees calling themselves the Belize Central Prison Employees Correlation.

Well, tonight, we note that there are 2 more employees who say that they were wrongfully terminated, because of what they call frivolous reasons.

We can't actually get into a discussion of the why they say they were terminated because it involves allegation of criminal behavior, but no police report has been made.

However, these two former employees spoke to us this evening, to explain the circumstances:

Felipe Gongora - Former Prison Officer
"Sometime around 2:00 I was called at the Human Resources office by the Deputy Chief officer Cocom and I was informed that my services were no longer required at the prison. There was no indication - the letter does not clear why but we have an idea more or less. Basically we are upset by the way we were treated by the management by the Colby Foundation and therefore we just want the public our dissatisfaction with the foundation itself because of the way we were treated. I'm a veteran prison officer for 19 years now, I served as the Chairperson for the officers welfare committee or Employees Welfare Committee and I had been vocal with management when it came to injustices of our officers so I had expected that at some time they would get me - but not like this. They have no reason whatsoever to terminate me just like that so I was unjustly treated."

Gaspar Camara - Former Prison Officer
"I was expecting to be terminated on Monday but that did not happen. But Tuesday I reported to work again and when I went I saw that my supervisor, Mr. Felipe Gongora, his computer was locked and I told him that if he was terminated then I would walk along with him even If I had to resign. I could say fortunately both of us were terminated for no reason - we will be seeking legal advice because we were terminated illegally."

When we reached the CEO of the Prison this evening, he was in a meeting and unable to speak.
