It's a new play called, "we won't pay, we won't pay," and the
folks at the Belize Theatre Company who are putting it together swear you won't
be able to stay in your seat. The play is based on Dario Fo's 1970 political
farce which was set in Italy. Now it's being done in Belize: director Dianne
Haylock and the two lead actors gave us a preview.
Dianne Haylock, Director
"It is a comedy, loads of laughter, but it is a comedy that represents
a lot of ludicrous, ridiculous, improbable kinds of situations, but at the same
time it is actually political in the sense that it is making a social commentary
on some of the social and economic ills that are affected a society."
Michael Coye, Actor
"I play Giovanni who is a working class man and pretty much at the beginning
of the play he goes through a lot of hardships but at the end of the play there
is a complete turnaround with Giovanni."
Pamela Gideon, Actress
"I play the Antonia who is Giovanni's wife whose action starts the whole
chain of events that send you on this crazy ride and just really shows the desperation
of people when they can't make their payments, can't meet their bills."
Dianne Haylock,
"As a people we have to be able to laugh at ourselves. If we can't laugh
at ourselves we're in a sorry sorry place. So I see this as us being able to
sit back and maybe not look at our selves directly but to look at people who
look a lot like us."
The play debuts tomorrow night at UWI's Auditorium on Princess Maragaret
Drive at 8pm and repeats through to Saturday. The show will run next week as
well from the 15th to the 17th. Tickets are $15.
