But all those issues of corporate and government obligation play no role in
BTL's most pressing current crisis. At newstime, all internet service across
the country was down, and all international calling services were at less than
half of capacity. And while it has affected Belize's phone users; the problem
has nothing to do with BTL. A senior executive this evening explained that the
arcos fiber optic network has failed. ARCOS runs beneath the sea, from Miami,
to interconnect Belize, Latin and North America. It is, quite literally, Belize's
international gateway to the world, but sometime between 3 and 3:30 this afternoon,
it collapsed. Because of the thanksgiving holiday in the United States it took
some time to mobilize repair crews on that end, and estimates are it should
be repaired this evening. Until then, it's going to be tough to make international
calls and impossible to use the internet. Presently BTL is routing some of its
calls through Mexico and Costa Rica.
NB: And BTL's 'system down' also explains the delay in the normal
site update.
