Last night we told you about the toxic tubes of imitation Colgate toothpaste
that are on store shelves across Belize. Well today, Dental Society members
and 7NEWS got a number of calls from concerned persons who've
been using the toothpaste. Turns out, many of the tubes were given away as shopping
bonuses and that happened recently as this weekend.
And while the tainted product continues to be on shelves, neither the Public
Health Department, nor the Ministry of Health, nor BAHA have issued a public
advisory. The problem we are told is that no one wants to concede to having
any responsibility for the unsupervised importation of toothpaste.
So while they are "touches" about bureaucratic turf, a very present
danger continues to lurk on store shelves and in homes across Belize. So, we'll
repeat the warning. If you have Colgate toothpaste in your home you need to
check it: the tainted tubes are the 100 milliliter size and they say "made
in South Africa or China." To be doubly sure, the authorized agent for
Colgate Palmolive in Belize says that the genuine article will say that it is
made either in the USA, in the Dominican Republic, or in Mexico. If it says
made in anywhere else, you can't be sure what you're getting.
