Fireworks Crackdown In the West
posted (December 20, 2013)
For the past few nights, we've been telling you about the seizure of contraband liquor in the north. That comes out of the Corozal Free Zone, but in the West customs has to contend with firecrackers coming out of Melchor!

It's well known that Melchor is the place to buy this stuff, but it's become a major black market industry - and one customs is determined to crack down on this year. That's why they sent Jesse the K-9 to the western border this month. And he's been coming up big time! Jesse sniffed out firecrackers stuffed into hidden panels in the back of a Toyota Tacoma from Corozal. He also sniffed out some in a compartment that was behind the seat. The trade is so high value, that the tailgate of the truck was actually modified to accommodate storage of what would locally be called "dynamite."

Since December ninth, Jesse has sniffed out three vehicles where firecrackers were stowed in a hidden compartment.
