112 new citizens were sworn in yesterday afternoon at the George Price Centre
in Belmopan. They come from as far way as Bulgaria and Russia and as close as
Guatemala and Jamaica.
Winston Smiling, Commissioner of the Supreme Court, administered the oath
of allegiance. Gareth Murillo, acting Director of Immigration and Valdemar
Castillo distributed the nationality certificates.
Belizean citizenship is granted after completing a series of steps including
a police review of the file which then goes to the Solicitor General for legal
vetting then returned to the Immigration and Nationality Department. The Director
of Immigration and Nationality then makes a recommendation to the Minister and
Nationality Advisory Committee for final approval.
