posted (July 8, 2014)
Taiwan's Ambassador to Belize David Wu's four year tour of duty in Belize has come to an end and he is leaving on Saturday. He is going to New Zealand - and as a sendoff he invited the media to lunch today. He says leaving is such sweet sorrow:..

"In the past four years and three months I really enjoyed my work in this beautiful country. We have a very good partnership with the government of Belize, but also many Belizean people treat me as a very good friend. There are so many people who I do not know their names, they greet me in the streets, the supermarket, in the places we went and this is really an amazing experience. It's a very unique country because we enjoy the support, the friendship and the goodwill so much. I will remember this beautiful country always."

Wu also commented on the recent trafficking in persons report that the US Government compiled on Belize. It referred specifically to certain Asian establishments where human trafficking is a concern. Wu said that in fact Taiwan and Belize plan to sign a cooperation agreement against Human trafficking shortly:..

"I think Minister Godwin Hulse is going to visit Taiwan very soon. In Taipei he is going to sign an agreement between Taiwan and Belize in regard to the human trafficking agreement. It's our major concern; we are very concern about this. I think after Minister Godwin Hulse goes to visit Taiwan after we sign the agreement - we can do better in this area."

Wu says his only regret is that Belize is still the only country in Central America that has no free trade agreement with Taiwan.

There are currently 260 Belizean students studying in Taiwan and 600 Taiwanese living in Belize.
