Police Ponder Charges For Grocer Who Killed Robber In OW
posted (September 23, 2014)
Last week Friday, we told you about the Chinese Business man who shot and killed a man who he said robbed him just a few minutes earlier. Well, tonight we have a bit more details to share on the case.

As we told you, it happened in front of the Hung Yun Store on the Otro Benque Road in Orange Walk Town. This is also a short distance from the Northern Regional Hospital. The Chinese businessman, 35 year old Lie Wen Lee reported to police that 2 men entered. One of them pointed a gun at him and his shop attendant and ordered them to get on the ground. When they did, the robbers stole 500 dollars in cash and 2 cellular phones. When they were escaping, the store owner pulled his licensed weapon and chased after them. He says that when one of them made a motion at his pants waist, as if to draw a weapon on him, he fired first and shot 30 year-old Leslie Kenrick Logan Jr.

Other eyewitness reports say that when Logan went tumbling down off his bike, the Chinese businessman walked up to him and shot him twice more, and he then started to kick Logan in the head.

When he walked off, emergency technicians tried to come to Logan's aid, but he took his last breath when they placed him on a stretcher.

Today, we asked the Police Press Officer about the reports of self-defence versus the businessman's alleged excess after the robbery had taken place. Here's what he told us:

Rafael Martinez, Public Relation Officer - Police Department
"Police visited a store on Otro Benque Road by the name of Hung Yun Store where the owner of that store reported that they were robbed by gunpoint by two male persons of dark complexion who made off with over a thousand dollars in cash and other items during which the owner pulled out his licensed 9mm firearm and fatally injured one of the robbers who was later identified as 30 year old Leslie Kenrick Logan of a Santa Familia address in Orange Walk. Police have since detained that owner of that store and have also issued a notice of intended prosecution to him as investigation continues. Of course he has been released since Friday."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir there is some reports that his intent to defend himself may have been forfeited when he pursued this alleged robber unto the street and then shot and killed him. Is that what police is investigating at this time?"

Raphael Martinez
"That's one of the angles of course that police are looking at as we speak."

Reporter
"There was another person that robbed the establishment. Has anyone else been detained in connection with it?"

Raphael Martinez
"No, we are still seeking that particular individual."

Reporter "If it is proven that the owner of the business did chase the individual out and shot him from behind, is that a prosecutable offense?"

Raphael Martinez
"Then he will be liable for charges."

Police sources tell us that a notice of intended prosecution is only a traffic document, and that the Chinese businessman may have been informed that his actions will be investigated.
