Mayor Bradley Threatens Media
posted (December 17, 2014)

Will Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley run for another term as the mayor of Belize City? It seems like we ask that question just about every other day – and that's because the mayor just won't give us a straight answer! And while he "hems and haws" on that one – today there was another question for the mayor – and he didn't hesitate at all on the answer – but he still managed to not answer. IT was a simple "yes/no" question, but the mayor turned it into something else altogether. We'll cut right to the chase:…

"We heard reliably, you have collected you have collected your pay up to February out of frustration."

Darrell Bradley - Mayor Belize City

"If you report certain things which are inaccurate, i'm going to sue you. I will answer all of your questions. I don't mind answering any of your questions but don't ask me something which is way out. In terms of the question. When I responded to you last time we had an interview, we live in a political world. I am part of a political organisation which the UPD, I hold a political office which is mayor, elected by the people. Say that kind of environment is not fraud with people who have differences of opinion is to be juvenile."

And while we take the mayor at his word that he may indeed sue, the question is justified because, first, he is a public figure, and it is a fair question not based on fantasy, but based on credible reports we've heard coming out of the council for three weeks. Today we followed up and asked the City Manager if he has been paid, and she too said no comment. But we have three reports from senior persons in the council who say that he has been paid.

So, back to the original question, will Darrell Bradley run for mayor in the March Municipal election. Again, today, no straight answer was forthcoming:…

Reporter

"There had been speculations, you are the mayoral candidate, as to whether you are having second thoughts and thinking about backing out."

Darrell Bradley

"I won't directly comment on that. This is respect to all of the questions, there's nothing wrong and I've been very frustrated by this, there is nothing wrong in a leader saying that certain decision are things where I have a difficulty with. To say that government is hard, to say that i'm frustrated, to say we have problems, that's not advancing the argument."

Reporter

"You have a wide fan base. Whether you want to conceed to it or not, you have a lot of people who are relying on you to take on another term and continue the work you are doing. So now you left people a little unsure that is going to continue under your leadership."

Darrell Bradley

"I can understand that. I'm saying that and i've mentioned it before. People are fixated on certain things. We're doing something which I think is very significant."

Reporter

"When I go to vote at the municipal election are you going to be an option for me to put my X beside?"

Darrell Bradley

"This is a certain thing, this is part of the frustration that I have, being real and honest. We have worked for 8 months, even the final days. Certain nights I didn't slept because we had to get this regulation at certain printers at a certain time, there was legal things we needed to do. There's a lot of other things going on. Audit took a lot of time because we've been delayed and I wanted to finish it before the end of the year. I'm at the office until late in the night finishing things that we really want to get done and I'm surprised that there's a concern out there in relation to that issue."

And he stumped us too, meaning that once again that conversation left us unsure if he's coming or going.
