Police Piecing Together Gonguez Murder/Jervis Shooting
posted (March 6, 2015)
Belize City police are still investigating the deadly gunplay on Mayflower Street which happened on Wednesday when the city was caught up in count for Belize City Municipal Elections.

As we reported, police responded to a shooting incident at around 9:30 at the corner of Mayflower and Vernon Street. There, they saw 32 year-old Jervis Valencio also known as "Jervis Valencia" fleeing the area, and when police ordered him to stop, he allegedly pointed a black pistol at them. The officers fired several shots at him, hitting him in the chest and neck. He was rushed to the KHMH for medical treatment, where he remains under police guard.

When police went deeper into the area, they saw 36 year-old Moses Gonguez lying on the ground dead at #13 Mayflower Street. They also checked at the KHMH, where they found 23 year-old Triston Gordon being treated for a gunshot injury to the leg. What they've been able to piece together is that Gonguez and Gordon were with 4 other friends. They were socializing, and that's when Jervis Valencia allegedly pulled up into the yard and started firing shots at the group. Both Gordon and Gonguez were hit by those bullets, causing the injuries.

Police are piecing together the story, and today we asked if police are closer to finding out why two men, from the same gang neighbourhood, ended up in such a deadly feud. Here's what they told us:

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., CIB, Eastern Division
"We have not established a motive. They are from that same area and they had some conflict that lead to that shooting. What exactly they were fighting over, we do not know."

Daniel Ortiz
"Is it believe that these two men are from the Mayflower gang?"

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., CIB, Eastern Division
"They are from that area."

Wednesday night's murder victim, Gonguez, was charged with attempted murder in 2011.
