Bradley Says Council Pickup Totalled
posted (March 6, 2015)
And in one more election day and night interview, we finally got a chance to speak with Re-elected mayor Darrell Bradley about the 2013 Hilux Pick-up assigned to the office of Mayor, which was reportedly totaled by Councillor Alifa Elrington Hyde.

The information which reached us on Monday that City Councilor Alifa Elrington-Hyde was driving that Hilux when she got into an accident and significantly damaged it.

Since then, no one has seen the vehicle, and so, we contacted the mayor for comment on Tuesday on the reports of the accident. He didn't respond, and so on Election night, the first time, we'd gotten an opportunity to interview him. We asked about that vehicle. Here's how he responded:

Darrell Bradley, Mayor - Belize City
"I don't know what the difficulty is of you getting confirmation, because that is if fact the case. That's an accurate reporting. Councilor Elrington was in fact in an accident. This occurred I think last week Friday. This happened around the midday hour. It was something that she reported to the police, we reported it to our insurance company, which is I think RF&G. The vehicle is comprehensive. I was somewhat dismayed that this would have been a political issue. I mean, it's a routine thing and this is one of the reasons why I have a Hilux truck. My vehicle is used for multiple purposes at city hall, including relaying workers, when we have visiting persons coming into the country, they use my vehicle to transport them. Other councilors routinely use my vehicle for council business and so there is a reason why it's called an accident and I was very somewhat concerned that a lot of the reporting about this, because I saw two of the reports: Channel 7 and Channel 5, they made an issue with the accident and it was a rather serious accident - at a time when all of us are kind of stressed out, because its elections and we are working very hard, but none of the workers inquired about councilor Elrington's condition and I was a little bit sad, in terms of the reporters, that this was a rather serious thing and people were making political issues with it and none of the issues raised had to do with the condition in which Councilor Elrington was. Thankfully and by the grace of God, she walked away from the accident with minimal injuries. I think I heard from Channel 5 that they were making an issue because she waited the following day to make a report. We had to go to the hospital just to ensure that she was okay. I mean, that's a really unreasonable and like a callous thing to kind of prejudice a person that were in a rather serious accident and you prejudice because you take certain steps to safeguard, person before property. The vehicle is comprehensively insured, she was on approved business."

Daniel Ortiz
"Information reaching us is that she who is member of your law firm, went with the mayor's vehicle to Corozal and running your chambers' business."

Darrell Bradley, Mayor - Belize City
"Daniel, tonight is election night. We are dealing with one problem at a time. I indicated to you, in terms of the accuracy of the report. Don't put things onto it that's not there."

Daniel Ortiz
"Is the vehicle totaled?"

Darrell Bradley, Mayor - Belize City
"Well, I am not a mechanic. It received substantial damage. The insurance company would have to do an assessment and somebody who is qualified to do that, but I will say that it is - the vehicle flipped."
