Women Artists In Shadows?
posted (March 12, 2015)
20 Belizean women will be featured in the Women in Art exhibit which opens tonight. The theme for this year's exhibit is "Shadows" - which, seems to say a lot about the world women are often relegated to. But, one of the organizers of the event said the theme aims to do the opposite - which is to encourage women to challenge the status quo with art.

Shari Williams, Communications Officer - NICH
"What Rachel was sharing with us was that she wanted to encourage more artist to move away from just the paint on canvas kind of field, but to really encourage them to do that 3 dimensional type of art. So, the theme really incorporates a 3 dimensional field to art. Besides the art on the wall and the female painters, we are also celebrating the women who are vocalist and singers and take part in drama and all the rest of it. So to open the exhibit this evening, we are going to have a performance showcase, which will be featuring some 15 women or so. So the opening is usually a grand event and then we have the exhibits on the wall for the rest of the month. For us in particular, we at NICH, we feel like the women who have contributed over the years to art are sometimes forgotten and so our role then is to really enhanced that part of the women's contribution to the development of Belize. In former years, we had workshops, where I think last year we brought in Zee Edgell or the year before that and she actually shared some of the trials and tribulations that Belizean women faced as artists. It's not only established artists, but also up and coming artists."

The Art exhibit will open up with a performance showcase at the bliss tonight at 6.
