Just Out Of Jail, Man Condemns Kolbe
posted (June 2, 2015)
34 year-old Belize City resident Robinson Michael was only just released from prison last week Friday after serving 7 years in jail for a number of offences, including unlicensed firearms, and obtaining property by deception. After being on lockdown, you'd expect Michael to go home, relax and enjoy his freedom, but no, he has decided to on the offensive against the prison, its administration and what he sees as maladministration and advantage-taking.

3 hours after being released, he came to our office to grant us an extensive interview to outline a catalogue of what he says are systematic abuses. It's a 40 minute long interview, and some of his comments we're unable to air at this time for legal reasons, but he did bring up a topic of a facility inside the prison. This facility, according to Michael, is in a state of disrepair, and it has caused a security breach which allowed a prisoner to escape recently. He's referring of course to Emmanuel Willoughby, who escaped from prison in December of last year, and was on the run for almost 2 months. In that extended interview, he claims that the prison administration is negligent in housing inmates in this rundown facility:

Robinson Michael - Former Prison Inmate
"The Prison has a facility that is called the Administrative Segregation, where they - it is divided into about 4 categories. It is also used as a quarantine for inmates who have contagious sickness such as tuberculosis and others. This facility is an abandoned building that was once called the old max-medium section. In 2009 - if I'm not mistaken, the prison took all the inmates out of the building and relocated them to another facility because of the deterioration of the building. The building is actually corroding - the ceiling is falling in on you when you sleep. You understand - the rickets rotten. The other day a prisoner escaped, but they didn't tell you how he escaped. Inmate Willoughby (He is referring to Emmanuel Willoughby) escaped from that facility by just bending the rickets because of the corrosion of the salt air and - the rickets, you could have just bent it, and this area of the prison is being used now to quarantine people that are sick."

This evening, the acting CEO of the Prison, Virgilio Murrillo responded to our request via comment saying, quote,

"While we agree that the said building is relatively dilapidated, Kolbe has repaired the salvageable cells to make them suitable for this purpose.."

Virgilio goes on to explain, quote, "It is a fact that inmate Emmanuel Willoughby did escape from this area and our investigations revealed that three corroded steel bars on the wicket were cut therefore, admittedly there is no doubt other human errors allowed it to have happened…I am not aware that these cells are crumbling as was reported by Michaels. He may be referring to the others that we are not using" End Quote.

Another issue that Robinson Michael wanted to discuss with us was the recent death of 61 year-old prison inmate Albert Gordon, which happened in March. That case made it in our newscast then, and according to Michael, it didn't go exactly like the medical doctor at the prison presented it. Here's his version of what happened:

Robinson Michael - Former Prison Inmate
"On March 1, they had an inmate, by the name of Gordon (Albert "Zeke" Gordon - made our news), that died - he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was placed back there on quarantine in an unhealthy environment because that is actually used as an area for problematic. It is also used as an area to house high profile inmates. It is also used as an area for people who are on sanctions. The population of the area is about 40 to 45 inmates."

"This old man was back there - 61 year-old - diagnosed with tuberculosis. I don't know if you may or may not be aware that tuberculosis after a period of 2 weeks on medication is no longer contagious, and you could be placed around other people."

"They left this man back there unsupervised until the man ended up choking on his own blood and died. Now, the doctor came and prettied the whole story for Kolbe. First of all, that man didn't belong at the administrative segregation. Like I told you, the condition, the deterioration of the building, it is not a place to house human beings, period."

In response, the Acting CEO quoted the prison Doctor Jaime Novelo's proert, which states, quote, "Inmate Albert Gordon visited the Medic Center on January10th, 2015, complaining of a chronic cough....Upon evaluation of a Chest X-ray, he was immediately quarantined and Tb treatment started…A few days later…. the test….revealed that he tested positive for Tb."

It continues,

"He completed his quarantine time on Friday February 26th, 2015, but requested to stay at the location where he was quarantined. He stated that he felt comfortable and was receiving proper care at the location. Inmate Albert Gordon was stable." End Quote.

But, as you heard Michael is rejecting that explanation, and he has decided to become an agitator for the prison population, which he claims desperately needs a voice. He has vowed to bring more issues to light along with proof.

We'll wait for that, but since he launched the first attack against the prison, they've responded by conducting one of their own. The Prison CEO told us today that Michael's credibility is highly questionable since he has a long rap sheet of criminal offences on the outside, as well as some questionable activities while behind bars also.

He has promised to send us a copy of that activities that Michael was allegedly engaged in while behind bars.
