Last night we told you all about the new structure in the police eastern division - where southside Belize City is now a branch unto itself. The new commander Senior Superintendent Chester Williams has all kinds of ideas about changing police strategy - but in the middle of a gang war, will he touch that third rail of urban diplomacy?; that is, will he meet with gang leaders? Yesterday, he didn't rule it out:..
Sr. Supt Chester Williams, Commander Eastern Division South
"I don't see a problem with it, if that is something that can work. I am willing to try whatever could be done to ensure that we address the crime situation. But I can tell you I will not be meeting with them over and over as if I am begging them to behave themselves. I will give them a fair opportunity like anybody else and let them know what are my intentions, what I expect of them and if they continue to perpetrate crimes, then the next thing to do is to enforce the law against them."
