And while businesses are getting tax relief – the bollards around the Memorial Park can't seem to get a break! The Bollards – are those upright cement
parking posts that circle the park. Four dozen of them have been run over – which puts a black eye on the entire park rehabilitation project – which is
only a few years old. We asked the Mayor if they are taking note, before things get out of hand. Here's what he had to say:
Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City
"That's an excellent question. I think that it is incumbent on the municipality to maintain facilities that are built, especially facilities that are
built by way of international funding and that are paid for by tax payer funding. One of the things I will say, I don't know specifically in relation
to the amount of the bollards that are damaged. I do know that the city council I saw several reports in relation to our efforts to ensure that we
maintain them and we locate them in a way that doesn't encourage their damage. I remembered that again with the media; I was asked a question in
relation to Battlefield park, why Battlefield park was designed the way that it was designed. And one of the reasons why we did that in terms of the
cement plaza and everything like that. A very small green space which is localized around a very intrusive fence area is because when we build things,
we try to think about preservation. So that battlefield part is a park that is easy to maintain because we think maintenance in the design. BTL park
likewise is very easy for us maintain that because we thought about that component within the design. In terms of those bollards; like if I had my way
in terms of design I wouldn't have put them there because it's a human nature kind of thing to just run into them. And if you notice at Battlefield
park, the bollards that are there because we do have some to prevent vehicles from coming into the park, they're made ours of iron. So if you drive
into those things, you're going to damage your vehicle not the bollards. So one of the things that we are doing when we're working forward is building
that component into the design itself; but I do recognize that, that area by Memorial park is a problem and it's something that I've seen reports. "
46 concrete bollards are currently broken.
